You may have received e-mails from outfits purporting to give you the latest news. The headlines are usually very relevant and maybe a bit provocative. There is only one problem: You never requested them.

As with any e-mail from an unknown source, our advice is not to open those messages. Many of them are advertisements. We have heard of others that contain an attachment and that is not a good thing. Sometimes the only cure after opening one of those attachments may be a total hard drive reformat.

Lately we have been receiving junk e-mails with subject lines advising that the information we requested is attached, or that we need to open the attachment for some other purpose.

Our advice to you is NOT to open any attachments from sources you do not know.

Perhaps we should remind you of a few key points:

  • Do not open mail with an unsolicited offer.
  • Do not open mail with an attachment if you don't know the sender.
  • Do not open mail bearing information that appears to be of interest if you do not know the sender.

If you choose to open one of these messages, we hope your data was backed up. If not, it may be history. At least the news / advertisement was interesting.
