Pornography Issues What is it? Is porn harmful? Page 1 of a 3 page article Next Page Page | 1 | 2 | 3 | It is often claimed that pornography (porn) is not harmful and that if you don't like it you don't have to look at it. There are flaws in both of these arguments. Sex between a husband and a wife is a meaningful and emotional expression of love, with the physical act being the culmination of a total experience. Sex between two strangers in front of a camera demeans the very nature of the act. Porn often places a woman in a subservient role, performing a variety of acts on the man. Some porn depicts women being raped or in bondage. Some porn features young adults, whose first exposure to certain types of behavior may be during the filming. Some people can become obsessed with porn. Some will seek someone with whom they can perform the acts they have observed, sometimes using Internet chat rooms to locate willing strangers. Some people commit crimes shortly after viewing porn. Some people are addicted to porn. Is porn harmless? We don't think so. Porn is a big business worth billions of dollars a year. As with any big business organized crime may control large portions of the trade. Porn Websites collect fees from viewers and thus they can be highly profitable. The more addicts the porn operators can generate, the more profitable the business will become. Porn can come to you without your asking for it. We have received a number of unsolicited e-mail mesages (spam) featuring young women in poses ranging from suggestive to totally nude. Some were engaging in acts we would prefer not to describe. This was e-mail that just appeared in our mailbox. It could also appear in the mailbox of an impressionable child. Some spam contains programming "scripts" that bring up a porn site on your computer, without your approval. If your e-mail preview feature is turned on simply "mousing over" an unopened message can take you to a porn site. Often, when you try to close the browser window with the porn site it will "spawn" more browsers, each with more porn, and closing those windows may spawn yet more browsers. It is possible to have 5, 10, or more windows open at one time. Porn operators can learn a lot about you when you visit their sites. You can quickly find yourself on a lot of spam lists receiving some pretty raunchy mail. We speak from experience; a few days after a spam unexpectedly took us directly to a porn site we began receiving a barrage of spam promoting porn sites and casinos. Some porn operators buy up domain names that are similar to well-known domains. They also look for domain names that have expired. Porn operators can easily monitor the public "Whois" records to find newly expired domains and snap up them up the very day they expire. In other words, a Website that you like to visit could suddenly become a porn site. As you can see, porn is not harmless and you can't always avoid being exposed to it.
