Dealing With Porn

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men (and women) to do nothing". -- Edumund Burke

Understand that porn can be addictive. It is also escalative, leading to a need for more bizarre forms to satisfy cravings. It is desensitizing. It can lead to acting out scenes depicted.

  • If you have become addicted to porn you should seek professional help to deal with it. You are not alone.

Protect your computer. A content filter can help keep your computer away from most porn. A firewall can help keep your personal information private.

  • Purchase a software package such as Zone Alarm Suite or Norton Internet Security, which includes a firewall that helps ensure privacy. A number of similar packages are available.
  • Subscribe to a filtering service. Many ISPs now provide this service for a fee.

Beware of junk e-mail (spam). Spam containing programming "scripts" can take you to a porn site without your permission if you simply "mouse over" the message.

  • Turn off your e-mail preview feature to avoid unpleasant surprises.
  • Be wary of opening any spam. Porn spam often has a misleading subject line.

Write and phone your elected officials, both Congressional and state. If you don't express your views they will listen to those who do, namely, the big money interests.

  • Ask them to support bills that control obscenity and that protect children from porn.
  • Ask local officials to ensure that public libraries provide porn filters on their computers.

Write the FCC. If you see a TV program that goes against decency standards tell them about it. Send them a video tape of the program if possible.

Write the Justice Department to encourage federal prosecutions of obscenity and child porn:

Hon. Eric Holder
US Attorney General
Department of Justice
Washington, DC 20530.
