Now, why would anyone in their right mind spend the time and energy to
put together a collection of UNIX notes, especially on a family-oriented
Website? There could be lots of reasons so we'll let you figure out which
one(s) might apply.
- You never know when you might need to talk to someone on the subway
about Grep or Awk.
- We are awaiting the day when everyone abandons Windows for Linux.
- We are forgetful and like to have our notes handy while working.
Yes, the last item tells it all. Now, through the magic of the Internet,
instead of investing thirty five cents for a small notebook at Peoples
Drug Store we can spend a couple of hundred bucks to put up a Website
and then pay an annual fee to host it. It's really very logical.
Linux is free to copy, it installs easily, and it runs very well on older
hardware. We have run it on a 486-133 with great success and it really
sails on a Pentium I class 200 Mhz system. The video is very attractive
on our older PCI bus 4 meg video board, which runs much faster than it
ever did under Windows 98. You can download Sun's Star Office suite for
free or you can also buy Word Perfect Office complete with the Linux operating
system for under $100.
