The Little Yellow Trolley By: Bob Morrisson Outside of Cleveland, Ohio, USA, the Shaker Heights Rapid Transit company used to operate lightweight trolleys in trains of up to four cars. These cars operated at moderately high speeds on their own right-of-way. For added safety these cars were equipped with air horns, in addition to the regular trolley bell. These horns were mounted underneath the front of the car.
A local resident became annoyed when, on occasion, one of the trolleys would sound its horn near her house. So she wrote to the company to complain that those little yellow cars were blowing their horns all the time and she demanded that they stop doing so. The superintendent dutifully posted a notice in the car house asking the operators of "those little yellow cars" not to use their horn when operating near this woman's house. He sent her a copy of the notice to reassure her that her concerns were being taken seriously. There was one little detail that the superintendent had accidentally overlooked when he composed the notice. Or perhaps he was reveling with delight because of it. You see, there was still one train of the old gray cars running on the line. These cars had a large and amazingly loud air whistle, which was mounted just above the front window so everyone could hear it plainly. In the hands of a capable operator, the air valve on that one note whistle could be manipulated to make some beautiful music. It was far more melodic than the rather anemic, and unplayable, horns on the new cars.
And play it they did. Since the "no horns" order was directed at "those little yellow cars", the operator of the big gray cars had no qualms about letting fly with that air whistle every time he got near her house. Those big brass air whistles make such a delightful sound. We can only hope that this lady appreciated hearing them. The chances are very good that she had plenty of opportunities to do so. |
