There are many long distance carriers from which you may choose.
These fall into three major categories. The chart below lists
these different types of companies and what we believe are their
advantages and their drawbacks.
There is no "one size fits all" company. You will
need to decide what isbest for you.
|
Name brand companies -
MCI, Sprint, Cable & Wireless, Qwest, AT&T,
etc. Service is usually excellent with good customer
support, but often at a premium price.

- There are so many plans to choose from that selecting
a plan can be very confusing.
- You may have to ask for the best rates.
|
| Resellers
- Smaller companies that resell services, with names you won't
recognize. Some own their lines, others lease them. Service
is usually excellent at favorable pricing but with more limited
customer support. |
|

- Service is generally quite good.
- Rates are usually very competitive.
- Innovative billing options can reduce rates even further.
|
Disadvantages
- Choices of service may be limited, however, there is less
confusion about rates.
- Customer service may be limited and may not be 24x7.
|
|
Dial-around services -
Heavily advertised on TV and by mail. Dial 10-1x-xxx
to use the service. Services and pricing vary. Read
the fine print carefully!
|
|
Advantages
- Services can be cost-effective for many people.
- Many types of services available.
- Many dial-arounds are run by large companies.
|
Disadvantages
- Services can be unexpectedly costly due to minimum usage,
monthly fees, etc. so read the fine print carefully.
- You will also need to choose a regular long distance carrier
to avoid penalties and fees.
