Setting Up Your DSL Service

Preparing for your new DSL service

As the popularity of DSL has increased so has the ease of installation. Most providers now send a self-install kit, which includes a DSL modem, software, filters for your telephones, and instructions. On your appointed turn-on date you should plan to spend 1-2 hours doing the installation. It's really pretty efficient - when the system works.

  • Many providers will have an installer come out for an extra charge.
  • Your ISP will not support a home network. Install the service on one computer and get it working before setting up the network.

So, you have ordered your DSL service and the self-install kit is on its way. What else should you do?

Prepare your DSL connection.

  • Ensure that there is a phone jack near the computer and that your wiring is in good shape. The wiring to the jack should have as few branches as possible.
  • If you have two lines in your home ensure that the line with the DSL service is near your computer. A Line 1 / Line 2 splitter may be included in the installation kit.
  • Purchase an Ethernet card and install it. A new PCI card is highly recommended. We suggest buying a 100 MB card; don't try to save $5 on an older 10 MB card.
  • If you are going to share your DSL connection you will need an Internet sharing device or software.

When the turn-on date arrives, install your DSL equipment.

  • Read the manual and follow the instructions!
  • Install a filter on every device on the line - Fax, caller ID, answering machine, etc. Each branch or tap on the line decreases the quality of service.
  • You can use any browser with your connection, however, you may need to install a special browser to set up your DSL account.
  • Run your browser's connection wizard to configure it for a LAN connection.

Configure your e-mail client for your new service.

  • Your provider should furnish instructions for settings up your e-mail account(s).
  • Configure your mail program.

If you are installing DSL on a dedicated line...

  • No filters are required. The DSL services is via a dedicated line.
  • Your DSL provider will probably perform the installation.
  • If you can find dedicated DSL you are indeed fortunate!
