What is a "broadband"
connection?
A
broadband connection operates at high speeds, much higher
than possible with a modem on a phone line. The name implies
a broad "bandwidth" connection. Broadband has many
advantages over a dial-up connection:
- It
is fast, often 7-10 times faster than a modem and it can be faster.
- It
is always connected, allowing you to receive e-mail and pages
at any time.
- You
can share one broadband connection with several computers.
- You
can tele-commute through your company's Virtual Private Network.
- Your
broadband provider is often your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Many
broadband connections are lopsided, allowing fast downloads of Web
pages while being much slower relaying requests for pages. For residential
users this is generally not a problem, especially since it allows
the ISP to price the connection more competitively. Business users
who rely on a broadband connection to connect several offices may
prefer a symmetrical connection, which will cost more.
There
are several types of broadband connection available. Let's take
a look at them one at a time.
