Getting Connected - Configuring TCP/IP

Now that your NIC is working you must configure TCP/IP (also called "IP") so it can communicate on the Interent. The illustrations below show numerous options but you need only be concerned with the ones that are described. For now just set up one computer and get it talking on the Internet. Later on we will make it run more efficiently.

Note: If your Internet connection is not yet installed you can still build your network. Follow the steps on this page to learn how to install your NIC and configure it.

  • The self-install kits provided by some DSL companies includes software that must be run to establish your connection. This software sets up a PPPoE connection, which is similar to a dial-up account. It may require that you load their version of a browser for the set-up.
  • Some DSL connections, and most cable connections, do not require running any software, except as a convenience. We recommend against using their diagnostic software or installing their browser.

The information below will be handy if you have to re-configure your system later, or if you are setting up a connection without using the software.

Configure TCP/IP

Right click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties. Click on the Configuration tab. Find TCP/IP for your NIC and click on it. In the picture at the right TCP/IP for a Linksys NIC is highlighted.

Click on the tabs and enter the settings listed below.

  • Bindings - De-select everything for now.
  • Advanced - Disregard.
  • DNS Configuration - Disable.
  • Gateway - Should be empty.
  • WINS Configuration - Disable.
  • IP Address - Obtain an IP Address Automatically.

Click OK and insert the Windows CD when asked. Allow a reboot.

Once you have Internet access we will change some of these settings.

See if you can connect!

Once your computer has come up connect the cable from the NIC to your broadband modem. The Link lights on the NIC and the modem should be on. Bring up your browser and use its connection wizard to establish a LAN connection.

  • You will connect to the Internet using a Local Area Network (LAN).
  • Do not set up a mail account or choose an ISP.
  • Use the default proxy server option.
  • Visit a Website and start surfing!

If your Internet connection is not in place yet you cannot go surfing. Continue to the next section to learn how to get your PCs talking to each other.
