Adding PCs to the Network

Once you have two PCs networked and Internet sharing is working you can easily re-configure the network or add new PCs to it., since you know it can work. Plug in your NIC, add TCP/IP, and begin the configuration. See Connect 1 PC if you need a refresher.

Decide whether to use Static IP addresses, which you assign manually, or Dynamic IP addresses, which are assigned by the DHCP Host in your gateway / router. Static is the simplest. Dynamic is ideal if you will connect other PCs to the network from time to time, i.e, a laptop. You can have a mix of static and dynamic IP addresses if you wish.

Configure your computer name

Right click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties. Click on the Identification tab.

  • Enter a unique computer name. If you are concerned about security use a name that does not tell anything about you.
  • Enter the name of your workgroup. You must use the same workgroup name for all computes on your network.
  • Click OK to return to the Network screen.

Configure TCP/IP

Click on the Configuration tab. Click on TCP/IP for your NIC. Click on Properties. Now configure the various settings. Click OK after finishing each tab. If you get back to Configuration do not click OK yet.

IP Setting
Static IP Address
Dynamic IP Address
DNS Configuration Disabled
WINS Configuration Disabled
Gateway* Enter 192.168.1.1 and click Add. The gateway should appear in the listing.
Bindings Uncheck everything. (This disables file sharing). If Windows asks you to choose something do not do so.
IP Addressing*
     IP Address
     Subnet Mask
Specify an IP Address
   192.168.1.2 or higher
   255.255.255.0
Obtain an IP Address Automatically

*If you are using a PC for your gateway:

  • The NIC connected to your network must have a static address of 192.168.1.1 and must not have a gateway address.
  • The NIC connected to the Internet must have a dynamic address and no bindings

If you are going to share files

  • Add the Protocol NetBEUI or IPX.
  • Click on NetBEUI or IPX for your NIC. Click on Properties.
  • Under Bindings (for NetBEUI or IPX) - Check Microsoft Client and File and Printer sharing.
  • Click OK.
  • Remember that you must also configure your disk drive(s) and printer to be shared.

Completing the setup

  • At the Configuration screen click OK.
  • When prompted mount the Windows CD. Then allow a reboot.

Configure your browser

You must configure your browser to work with your network. The easiest way to do this is with the browser's setup wizard.

  • Bring up the PC and start your browser.
  • Go to your browser's configuration and set up its Connection. Choose the options for a LAN Connection.
  • If you are asked to configure a proxy server do not do so; use the default mode.
  • Do not configure a mail account or set up any other services.
  • Start your browser. You should be able to connect to the Internet. If you can't, and if you are running any type of firewall or filtering, turn it off and try the setup again.

That's it!

Your network should be up and running and sharing one Internet connection. You should be able to click on Network Neighborhood and see all of your computers. If not, go back to the IP configuration, click on the Advanced tab, and find the option to make your computer a Browse Master.
