You will configure your gateway using the information
you gathered earlier. The chart below describes the meaning
of those numbers you gathered earlier so you can relate
them to the instructions that came with your gateway.
If you haven't already done so, it's time to read the
manual that came with your router or your software. Yes,
it will be a much better day if you will just read that
manual!
- For a software gateway, use the CD to install the
program. The documentation may be on disk rather than
in printed form.
- Many hardware gateways (routers) use a Web browser
for configuration. You will have to use a PC with a
NIC set for static IP addressing to run the setup.
| DNS Server |
Domain Name Service server
- The server your ISP uses to resolve Internet addresses
such as www.Eagle-Wing.Net into IP addresses.
You should have two
or more DNS addresses. Enter all of them. |
| IP Address |
The gateway
has two IP addresses:
WAN IP - The IP address
for your Internet connection.
LAN IP - The IP address
on your network. |
| Subnet Mask |
Defines how the bits of the
IP address are used.
The WAN subnet is set
by your ISP.
The mask for every PC
and for your router is 255.255.255.0. |
| Default Gateway |
Your ISP's gateway. You do
not need to enter this.
|
| Additional
Information furnished by your ISP |
Host Name - Often, a name
your ISP assigns to your PC.
Domain Name - Often, the name your ISP wants you to
assign to your network. |
DHCP host option
Your gateway or router should have a DHCP Host
option . Enable this option in case you decide to use
Dynamic IP Addressing. DHCP will use a base address
(192.168.1) and assign the final number.
- The address range will be 192.168.1.x.
- The sub-mask will be 255.255.255.0.
- If you are asked for a starting address use 50 or
higher.
Software gateway
Your gateway software should present you with a list
of the NICs it finds in the system. If the NIC for the
Internet is connected to the cable or DSL modem the gateway
may see this connection. Enter the numbers that you gathered
for the NIC connected to the Internet.
- The IP address must be 192.168.1.1.
- The sub-net mask must be 255.255.255.0.
Hardware gateway (router)
A router may be configured through a Web browser. For
now this must be done from a PC that has a static IP address
(any address between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254).
The illustration below is for a Linksys router. To access
this screen you would open your browser and enter the
address of http://192.168.1.1. Pressing "Enter"
should bring up a password screen. For the Linksys leave
the user name blank and enter Admin as the password.
