Your Gateway - What To Buy

To share an Internet connection you must have a Gateway. You must decide whether you want to use a hardware or software gateway.

A Hardware Gateway, often called a Router, usually includes a Switch and a Firewall, making it an ideal core for a 4 or 5 PC network. Many include instructions for setting up a network (thus bypassing this very excellent, well written, and humble tutorial). Many excellent routers are now available for under $100. Our favorite is the Linksys, which is pictured below.

A Software Gateway runs on a Host Computer, which must be on for anyone else to use the Internet. A software gateway will work with any type of Internet connection, including a dial-up line. Many many will support multiple connections, allowing for flexability in a complex environment.

Which is better? Only you can decide. There is no longer much of a cost differential and both solutions work. Our personal choice is a router, however, if you are sharing a dial-up line you will need to use software. The chart below should help with your decision. The costs shown are for the gateway only; each PC requires a NIC and a cable.

Router
Software
Hardware cost $75-200; Supports 3-4 PCs.
Switch or hub: $40-60.
Ethernet card and cable: $20-40.
Software cost None required. Free to $40 for 3 users, more for additional users.
Configuration Relatively simple, often Web-based. Can be a bit tricky if you are new at this.
Speed Very fast. Depends on the host PC and the number of connections.
Firewall Often built in. Must be installed separately. Costs $0-100.
Connections supported DSL, cable, ISDN; Up to 253 users. Any type of connection. The user count depends on the license.

Other considerations

Most gateways now provide DHCP support, which provides IP addresses for your computers. This simplifies the process of adding new computers to the network, however, it is not essential if you only have 2-3 PCs.

Some network kits include gateway software and several good programs can be downloaded from the Internet. You should always run firewall software for security. See our resources page for more information.

You can order the LinkSys Router and other computer hardware and software right here!  This very popular router allows sharing a DSL or cable connection among several computers.

Click on the picture at the left or the link above and shop 'til you drop. Just look for Networking or search for the model BEFSR41.
